Savannah, are you ready to laugh until you sing and sing until you laugh? Because on June 28th at 7pm, Improv Opera VII is taking over Telfair Square, and it’s going to be our biggest, boldest, most joy-filled anniversary show yet. Whether you’re an opera aficionado or someone who’s never seen a curtain rise, this is the night for you.

Moon River Opera proudly presents the seventh edition of our flagship show—Improv Opera, where the drama of grand opera meets the delightful chaos of improv comedy. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience, built on the idea that opera can be spontaneous, hilarious, and yes, even interactive.

Wait, Improv and Opera… Together?

Absolutely. Think of it as Whose Line Is It Anyway? meets La Traviata. We ask the audience for suggestions—locations, emotions, ridiculous plot twists—and our professionally trained opera singers take those ideas and run with them. On the spot, they craft arias, duets, and ensemble scenes with all the vocal power of a traditional opera and all the unpredictability of live comedy. No two shows are ever the same.

Somehow, in a single night, you might hear a tragic aria about a sandwich left on a park bench, a heartfelt duet between a ghost and a barista, or a heroic chorus about saving a goldfish from a vending machine. And it will be sung in glorious operatic style.

What starts as laughter becomes awe as our singers soar through improvised melodies that sound like they were plucked from centuries-old scores. It’s funny, yes—but it’s also good. This is real vocal artistry on full display, just with a few more banana peels and pratfalls than you might expect.

Seven Years of Making Opera Fun Again

Improv Opera VII isn’t just another show—it’s a celebration of seven years of redefining what opera can be. From our very first performance, Moon River Opera has been committed to the idea that opera doesn’t have to be intimidating or elite. It can be playful, surprising, and deeply human. And what’s more human than laughter?

Each year, Improv Opera has drawn bigger crowds and more enthusiastic responses, proving that Savannah has a big heart for creative performance and community joy. This show has become a signature tradition for us—and for many families, couples, and curious newcomers who stumble upon it and leave hooked on opera for the first time.

A Night Under the Stars

Set against the historic backdrop of Telfair Square, this open-air show invites you to bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets. It’s opera in the park, under the sky, surrounded by the sounds of Savannah and the buzz of shared laughter.

You won’t need a tuxedo—just your imagination and a willingness to be part of something delightfully unexpected. Kids love it. Adults love it. Even people who say “I’m not an opera person” find themselves clapping along, laughing out loud, and marveling at what live performance can do.

It’s also a rare kind of evening in today’s world: one that brings people together across generations and interests. No screens, no pretense—just music, creativity, and community.

Behind the Scenes: How Do We Do It?

You might be wondering how on earth a singer can create a full operatic aria out of something as silly as “a haunted garden gnome.” The answer? A lot of training—and a lot of trust.

Our performers are classically trained, many with degrees in voice performance and years of stage experience. But just as importantly, they’re fearless collaborators. In rehearsals, they work not from sheet music but from group exercises, games, and trust-building challenges. Timing, harmony, and listening are everything.

It’s a bit like musical jazz. The structure is loose, the energy is high, and the performers are constantly adjusting to each other in real time. When they get it right—and they do, often—it’s pure magic.
